The word Cassion originates from the French word Caisse meaning box.
Caisson foundation is a box-like structure, round or rectangular that has sunk to some desired depth from the surface of both land and water.
This satisfies the purpose of keeping the foundation underwater.
Technically speaking of caisson, it can be defined as a water tight box which acts as substructure in the main construction.
When Caisson is required:
The soil consists of massive boulders that obstruct the entry of piles.
A huge sub-construction is required under the rear bed to offer resistance to forces that can be dangerous due to floating objects and rungs etc.
The foundation is subject to a huge lateral load.
The depth of the water level in the river and the sea is high.
Included in the load compositions are river forces.
Groundwater levels are aggressive.
Advantages of Caisson:
Casson is more economical.
Stacks reduce the need for caps.
It makes less noise and vibration during construction.
They can be easily moved to different site positions.
It has high axial and lateral loading capacity.
Disadvantages of Caisson:
It is highly sensitive to manufacturing processes.
They are not good at polluted places.
Lack of building experience.
Lack of skilled labor.
