Retaining Wall

A retaining wall is a structure that aids in holding soil material behind it.

There different types of retaining walls depending on the purpose and the predisposed condition of the area intended to be erected.

Also, different materials can be used to build the structure.

Some of the materials which could be used are reinforced concrete, treated timber panels, rocks, and boulders carefully arranged, masonry block wall, etc.

Generally, retaining wall is purposed as follows:

1.Creating a flat land out of a slope:

Generally flat land is more desirable as compared to sloped land due to its versatility.

Hence one can convert sloped land to flat land by incorporating a retaining wall.

Flatland maybe to be used as a sports field.

For functional support for holding soil behind it.

2.Helps in preventing soil erosion:

This is achieved by improving the site drainage.

A flat land reduces the speed of water runoff as compared to sloped land, hence reducing the rate of soil erosion.

Aids in achieving certain landscape design hence improving the overall aesthetic value of the property.

3.Prevents damage to the property:

Flatland reduces the acceleration speed of rocks, boulders, and soil from higher altitudes which in turn mitigates against damage of property.

4.Retaining wall is important in the holding back of water:

In the case of water body bordering land, a retaining wall can be constructed in between so as to provide pathways around the water body and also improve the aesthetic value of the area.

5.Helps in simplifying maintenance:

It goes without saying; flat land is easily maintainable as compared to sloped land.
